David Pratt - WAR TIMES
16th January - 11th April 2027

Exploring four decades of his conflict imagery, WAR TIMES is a major solo exhibition by acclaimed Scottish photojournalist David Pratt. The exhibition captures the stark realities of warfare while emphasising civilian resilience, displacement and lingering scars on the environment and communities.

This “emotional landscape” is explored in a pictorial montage style, weaving raw literary elements from the photographer’s frontline field notes alongside the images themselves. Departing from traditional documentation, this photo-literary-diary traverses Afghanistan, Iraq, Central and South America, the Balkans, sub-Saharan Africa, Ukraine, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Pratt’s intimate written reflections add a deeply personal layer to the visuals, revealing the psychological weight of witnessing history and the temporal distortion war inflicts on both subject and photographer.

Photographer, journalist, broadcaster and author, David Pratt has spent over four decades working as a photographer and war correspondent covering foreign affairs. In that time his work has been published and broadcast worldwide.

Among the many media outlets in which his photography and written work have appeared are the BBC, The Herald, Sunday National, The Scotsman, Sunday Times, The Independent, Daily Telegraph, The New York Times, Svenska Dagbladet, Channel 4 News, Reuters, Agence France Presse (AFP), Al-Jazeera), Sogo Magazine and Black + White Photography Magazine. Studies in Photography, magazine of the Scottish Society for the History of Photography (SSHoP).

Recent exhibitions include “Only With the Heart” - Sogo Arts Gallery Glasgow 2019  then shown at Centre des arts - International School of Geneva Switzerland 2024; “Pictures From Ukraine” - Sogo Arts Gallery Glasgow 2022 then shown at Centre des arts - International School of Geneva Switzerland 2024; “Vukovar 91” - Multimedia War Photography Exhibition, Hrvatski dom Vukovar, Croatia 2026.

Pratt is an alumnus of the Glasgow School of Art, where he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and later taught art and design history before pivoting full-time to documentary photography and journalism. Among his many accolades, he has been named Journalist of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards. He is also a two-time Reporter of the Year, a two-time Feature Writer of the Year, and a five-time finalist in the Amnesty International Media Awards for human rights reporting.

In 2026, the University of Glasgow awarded him an Honorary Doctorate (DLitt) in recognition of his services to photography, journalism, and broadcasting.

Pratt is the author of Intifada: The Long Day of Rage, a reportage account of the Palestinian uprisings. His career photographing global conflicts was the subject of a BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland television documentary series. The first two films, Pictures From Afghanistan and Pictures From Iraq, premiered at the Glasgow International Film Festival in March 2020 and 2022, respectively, with the latter earning a nomination for a Best Factual TV / Torc Award for Excellence at the 2023 Celtic Media Festival. Pictures From the Balkans broadcast in 2022, followed by Pictures From Ukraine, which aired as a two-part film on BBC Scotland in 2023. In 2026, Pratt also collaborated as a photojournalist with award-winning Scottish filmmaker and director Robbie Fraser on the short documentary Dear Glasgow: Letters from Mykolaiv, celebrating the official twinning of Glasgow and the Ukrainian “Hero City” of Mykolaiv.
