Photography in Land Relations

Photography in land relations: an artist talk with three Scotland-based artists
3pm - 4.30pm Saturday 16th March
Free but ticketed - Book through Eventbrite

A land, a landscape, a place, a region, a locality, a dear place, a home, somewhere here and over there. How do we look at the land across scales and develop a new lexicon, new ways of seeing, a new set of ideas to grapple with the contested histories and resist the injustices in land relations? Join this artist talk to hear three Scotland-based photographers – Iryna Zamuruieva, Zoe Hamill and Haneen Hadiy – discussing their work in relation to the politics, connection and (re)production within land relations.

Iryna Zamuruieva will share her analogue photography and writing experiences emerging out of a residency at Street Level Photoworks, where she worked with Geranium to study the making of militarised landscapes and feminist approaches to landscape photography across Ukraine and Scotland.

Zoe Hamill will speak about her photographic work in progress investigating the oil-shale bings of West Lothian. Created as a by-product of Scotland's first oil manufacturing processes in the 19th Century, the heaps of industrial waste have now become a haven for biodiversity in the UK.

Haneen Hadiy will reflect on how her longing attachment to the date palms of Iraq took her on a self-directed residency to live with the beloved date palms of the land of Mesopotamia, learning to understand the emotional and physical language of the palms.

The discussion will be mediated by Theo Hynan-Ratcliffe, Salt Space committee member, artist and sculptor and hosted by Street Level Photoworks. The event is part of the public programme of Uncertain Futures Residency Programme exhibition at Salt Space Studio in Axiom Building, 15-24 March.
