Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra returned to Street Level Photoworks with their protean improvisation strategies. Starting in the Gallery their performance gradually unfolded spatial and sonic forms throughout Trongate 103. Part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival 2011.
GIO is a large ensemble of around 20 musicians from diverse artistic backgrounds such as free improvisation, jazz, classical, folk, pop and experimental musics as well as performance art.
Since its inaugural project in October 2002 the Orchestra has established a reputation, both locally and internationally, for innovative projects and critically acclaimed improvised music. A slew of collaborations with world renowned improvisers have helped expand the band's artistic horizons. Today, Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra perform at venues around the UK and Europe, collaborate with leading improvising musicians and have established their own annual festival in Glasgow which provides a platform for like-minded musicians and artists. They work in education and outreach settings, create, perform and record new works, and develop performances in collaboration with film and visual artists.
