Unimproved was a two person show presenting a selection of new and archival work by
Glasgow artists Alan Dimmick and Steve McQueen.
Alan Dimmick is a visual historian-in-progress. He is known nationally as a photographer
who documents the work, exhibitions and events of artists, architects and performers
surrounding milieu that accompanies these social and associated proceedings.
Over the years he has built up a healthy collection of such photographs.
But there is more to Alan than this. Even when he takes himself away from his
assignments you will find him working in, and from the landscape recording instinctively
(and passionately). He is the archetypal collector and hoarder of images and
assorted paraphernalia. Alan gave us a glimpse into his photographic collection
in Unimproved, his first public showing in 20years.
Living in an urban setting and beguiled by wild land Steve McQueen strives to
find balance in the opposing requirements of both. Seeking to capture an episode
or moment in the existence of a bird, animal or insect takes him into remote
areas, sometimes for days. Eschewing a hide in favour of fieldcraft, he stalks
his subject as close as is mutually accepted to produce intimate films exhibiting
aspects of behaviour. In his photographs McQueen relates formal elements with an empathetic response
which connect him in some way to whichever environment he finds himself in. This new
work incorporated two short looped films presented alongside related drawings
and photographs taken in transit.
Alongside these short looped films Steve presented related photographs and drawings
that he has produced whilst in transit.
A small publication illustrated by Laura Michael accompanied the exhibition.
