RADIANCE

Festival of Light : Street Level curated events

November 2007

As part of Radiance 2007, Street Level curated a programme of visual arts works which activated a number of neglected and hidden locations, vacant shop units, and sites ‘in development’ in the Merchant City. Some of these responded site-specifically to the physical and historical space in the area, whilst others re-presented work which responded to the theme of the festival and the context of a neighbourhood undergoing rapid change.

a new moon Title: Cloud Chamber
Artist: Samantha Clark
Description:
A surrealist encounter, this work brings the grand stratocumulus down to earth for an improved head-in-the-clouds dreaming experience.

Q Gallery studio, 87-91 Saltmarket
samclark Title: Reach
Artist: Samantha Clark
Description:
In this video work, the elusive flights of night flying insects drawn to a light in a window are mirrored by the sound of shortwave radio broadcasts of distant music and voices we can’t quite hear.

64 Osborne Street and old Bathouse, Osborne Street.

firefly Title: Fire-Fly
Artist:  Nigel Johnson
Description:
Inspired from witnessing one summers evening around dusk, large points of luminous, glowing, green light, dancing in the night air. The American fire-fly is an insect that uses a chemical reaction within a light emitting organ on the underside of their abdomens to communicate with each other, an event that is translated into an interactive, computer controlled environment.
Dates: 23rd-25th November.

Muster Hall, Bell Street.
johnson Title: Light Pool
Artist: Nigel Johnson

Description: Casting a pebble into a pond and the hypnotic fascination of watching ripples spread out across the surface of still water becomes the starting point for this meditative installation, where the participants become the pebbles and the disturbances ripples of light.

53 King Street
hollingsworth Title: Peloton
Artist: Steve Hollingsworth
Description:
A piece of social sculpture, a performance and a video screening - a filmed journey of 20+ cyclists on bikes fitted with a blue neon tube projected on to a purpose built screen suspended between the walls of the courtyard. This is a site-specific commission with the artist.

Tontine courtyard
richman Title: Martin Richman
Artist: untitled

Description: This site of ancient graves in the heart of the city, surrounded on three sides by prosaic modernist commercial structures, carries a particular poignancy acting almost as a time tunnel, the site seemingly little changed in hundreds of years. In this environment, Richman will create three separate subtle, but resonating, pieces of work which use the cage structures built above the graves as a basis  for the pieces. A site-specific commission.

Ramshorn Gardens, off Ingram St at Candleriggs.
pinsky Title: Transparent Room
Artist: Michael Pinsky

Description: The work suspends the viewer in a virtual space – here you see through the walls and the ceiling to the sky, hidden rooms and the street outside. The room’s confining walls are replaced by projections of the city, its time accelerated as clouds speed by, cars and people in the street outside race through their lives. A context specific commission.

73 Trongate

healy Title: Animated Box
Artist: Stephen Healy

Description: This work is a 3-D rendered version of a random doodle, whereby a small box shape structure seems to expand like an alien lifeform, exuding light as it breathes.

64 Osborne Street
hosie Title: Island Ramp
Artist: Malcolm Hosie

Description: This work is constructed from fluorescent tube fittings and galvanized steel. Originally designed as an outdoor piece, it is an attempt at exploring the use of light as an elemental experience within sculpture.

Old Bathouse, Osborne Street
light reading room Title: Light Reading - 1500 Cinematic Explosions (2005, 1 min)
Artist: Elizabeth McAlpine (UK)

Description: The whitest frame taken from 1500 feature-film explosions and compiled into a minute-long film.
Courtesy: Laura Bartlett Gallery.

Old Bathouse, Osborne Street.
brilliant noise Title: Brilliant  Noise (2006, 5 min 56 sec)
Artist: Semiconductor

Description: Working with footage of the sun from NASA, the artists have created new time-lapse sequences with layers of audio manipulation and radio frequencies

64 Osborne Street.
anewmoon Title: A New Moon
Artist: Claire Morgan

Description: Suspended from a crane above the heart of the Festival site is Clare Morgan’s super sized light bulb. New Moon offers clues both to regeneration, change and the environment. This temporary light-based installation is 4.3 metres tall and takes the form of a domestic light bulb which is suspended from a 25m tall tower crane. Hundreds of tiny lights illuminate the contours of the ‘bulb’. The work creates a striking focal point in the night sky, aimed to make people pause and ponder. In the context of Radiance, the work signals change and uncertainly.

Developed in association with: Scottish Enterprise Glasgow. Originally commissioned through InSite Arts Ltd by Canterbury City Council with funding from Arts Council and Land Securities plc.
