An exhibition of photography,
including a vibrant series of portraits made with people from over 15 different countries including Eritrea,
Iraq, Mongolia, Turkey, Somalia, Sudan and Zimbabwe. This also marked the launch of the multi-story website. The photographs, personal stories, songs and video on the site
have been made with asylum seekers living in North Glasgow. Introductions
to digital recording, digital video, photography, web design and
digital imaging were run in the community resource at the YMCA
s 31st floor.
multi-story.org features cookery videos of traditional recipes
from China, Eritrea and Zimbabwe and traditional songs from Lithuania,
Mongolia and Somalia, alongside photography taken around Glasgow.
Narratives also offer an inside perspective on life as an asylum
The site can be navigated in 6 different languages Arabic,
English, Farsi, French, Somali and Turkish. It celebrates positive
aspects of Glasgows growing ethnic communities that are being established through the refugee population.
Street Levels work with refugees and asylums seekers dates
back to 2000, since then over 10,000 refugees have settled in
Glasgow. What do these new citizens bring? What can we share and
learn together? In a society where culture is universally under
threat from global consumerism and difference is treated with
suspicion, these questions and creative exchanges offer a channel
for fostering better foundations for Scotlands growing communities.
