When the giant Ravenscraig steelworks was dismantled, one of the largest brownfield sites in Europe was created. Over the past five years Sandy Sharp has been photographing the natural regeneration of this challenging environment in a range of lyrical and realist works.
The exhibition captured aspects of this uncompromising and post-industrial landscape and portrays universal themes of creation, achievement and renewal. These three aspects formed the structure of the exhibition into its constituent and linked parts. The works combine both black and white photography produced through the wet darkroom process and colour shot on 35mm, with the negatives scanned and printed digitally. Whilst the former could be said to represent the brief period of industrial production on the site and uses the craft of black and white photography to mirror the craft of steelmaking, the colour works embody change, resilience and growth through the process of abandonment.
