Peter and Cat delivered participatory workshops over two days with two community groups. Each workshop included a gallery tour, followed by a practical session where those involved created collages from newspaper text and magazine images. Adobe Photoshop was used to create digital collages from scanned personal items, photographs and text, at times with body stencils made from digital portraits.

Day 1
In collaboration with arts development at South Lanarkshire Council. Young people aged 12-16 attended the gallery from Whitehill Youth Project in Hamilton. The group worked together with Peter and Cat to produce a series of placards that were displayed outside at the gallery entrance over the next few days. The artists had this to say about the experience:

“The Whitehill group were great, they burst through the doors of Street Level in a frenzy of energy and got stuck into the workshop from the word “Go”. Cutting and pasting images together, scanning stuff and photographing each other, making digital images and drawings - they worked with unstoppable energy! They built placards of all the work which were immediately put on public display outside the gallery and which drew a lot of comment from passers by.

They were amazingly creative using the materials made available to them by Street Level, making images that depicted their lives and beliefs. Hopefully they will be able to take the experience of being artists into their project at Whitehill.”

Day 2
A mixed group of individuals affiliated to both Falkirk Camera Club and The Brendan Link spent the day with Peter and Cat exploring two collage techniques. A number of strong collages were produced, referencing topics as diverse as arthritis and pop culture, a selection of this work is included in the slideshow below.
