"Street Level's OPEN is one of the few relatively established Opens in Scotland, it offers a chance to catch a glimpse of some of the countries most interesting established and upcoming lens-based media artists...an important contribution to the diversity of Scotland's art scene..."
The List
A dynamic exhibition that showcased the best of new Scottish lens based art was presented as the fourth 'Street Level Open'. The work was selected by Beck's Contemporaries Prize-winning artist and Creative Scotland recipient Roderick Buchanan; writer Moira Jeffrey; Patricia Fleming, Visual Arts Programmer at CCA, Glasgow; and Malcolm Dickson and Janie Nicoll of Street Level.
The exhibition displayed a lively and thought provoking mix of styles and approaches, featuring work by both emerging and established artists. The work on show reinforced the current importance of video as a medium for contemporary artists, with the exhibition itself evenly divided between the moving and the still image. The exhibition also reflected the current widespread interest in digital imaging techniques through the large scale optical works of Stephen Healy, the virtual poster works of Bill Breckenridge, to the quirky montage works of Argentinian born artist Ral Veroni.
