The title of this exhibition 'Adesh' takes its meaning from the Hindi expression meaning 'you have my permission'. This refers to the 22 portraits in this exhibition of Sadhus - Indian Holy men - taken on a series of visits to remote areas in Northern India by photographer Andrew McDermid. The exhibition consisted of stunning black & white and cibachrome prints, that offer a rare and intimate view of these mystical Gurus. The artist describes the project, which spanned 3 years, as follows:
"I was drawn to India, the Mystic East, by a fascination with a culture vastly different to my own, and a desire to discover a 'magic' in life that is camouflaged within Western society. I found what I sought along the banks of the Ganges and high in the snow-capped Himalayas. Living in Shivas Land I encountered semi-naked, dreadlocked Yogis. Fiery in appearance, they had love, understanding, divine spirituality and magic. I had found my source of the Mystic East in these Sadhus".
