This work was one in a series of installation works which this duo rolled out across a number of Scottish galleries and institutions at a time when the video installation was a relatively unexplored medium within the context of Scottish based art practices. Devised for multi-monitor set-up, the works imagery and impulse was influenced by the political context of 1980s Britain, and in particular was a response to the depiction on TV of the Miners Strike and the manifestations of urban unrest that were springing up across the country. This view of mainstream media on these events was strictly from behind the riot shield, and the work of Pictorial Heroes reacted accordingly, identifying TV as the medium of confrontation and alienation. Energetic, provocative and angry, PH’s was and remains a rough and ready challenge to the definition of video art.

Pictorial Heroes began as a collaboration between two graduates (Doug Aubrey and Allan Robertson) from Maidstone College of Art’s seminal Fine Art Video course. With the legacy of the Falklands War and the Miner’s Strike leaving a deep emotional and creative scar, Pictorial Heroes was their way of collectively responding to the times they were living through in Thatcher’s Britain. Pictorial Heroes was a fusion between art, pop, politics and technology, and took the form of single screen tapes, some of them award-winning, and multi-screen gallery happenings and installations. Foremost amongst them were installations at the Scottish Society of Artists, McLellan Galleries and the Seagate in Dundee.

They have shown at several international video art festivals, including the Worldwide Video Festival in Den Haag and the Locarno Video Festival. As a production company in the early 90s Pictorial Heroes went on to produce provocative documentaries, including: ‘World of Skinhead’, ‘XXX Tripping’ and ‘Victim of Geography’ for Channel 4, before disappearing into self-imposed obscurity!
