For the fifth instalment of our Close Up artist talks we will be joined by internationally renowned photographer and director David Eustace, whose exhibition 'Dear John, A Thirty Year Portrait' is currently on show at Glasgow Print Studio, next door to Street Level Photoworks in Trongate 103.

Taken over a thirty year period, 'Dear John' features twelve striking photographic portraits of John Byrne, as well as one further portrait specially commissioned for Glasgow Print Studio. Eustace refers to this body of work as a "very personal portfolio" containing twelve of his favourite portraits of a "cherished and wonderful pal." He reflects that the portraits "form cherished memories and moments combined within a frame that offer an insight of a bigger picture."

Born in Edinburgh, but raised in the East End of Glasgow, he did not pick up a camera until he was twenty-eight. Prior to embarking on a photography career, he served with the Royal Navy before spending seven years working as a prison guard at Barlinnie. Whilst working at the notorious prison he joined a local camera club and discovered he had a creative eye. He was a member of Glasgow Photography Group in the late 80s, the association that led to the establishment of Street Level Gallery and Workshop. He studied photography at Edinburgh Napier University before moving to London where he worked as a masthead contributor at GQ / Vogue and Tatler, as well as a number of other London based magazines and a list of international advertising clients.

Since 1991 he has photographed a host of celebrities; such as Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Judi Dench and Sophia Loren, while his fashion, landscape and documentary work is also highly respected. He was appointed Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University in October 2015. His work is in the collections of The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery in London. He has also had a major exhibition in a London Cork Street Gallery, which was the subject of a BBC documentary, as well as work exhibited at the RSA in Edinburgh. His selected works were exhibited in The Scottish Gallery in February 2015, followed by a second exhibition titled 'Still • Landscape • Life' in 2018.

'An Evening with David Eustace ' was held at Street Level in 2015, which saw him in discussion with writer and creative director Grant Scott.

We have a handful of remaining copies of David's limited edition monograph 'I WRITE TO TELL YOU OF A BABY BOY BORN ONLY YESTERDAY...', which comes with a limited edition print. For more information or to purchase a copy please email john@streetlevelphotoworks.org.
