Introducing the whole process of B&W analogue photography in one weekend, from exposure and composition to processing your film, printing up contact sheets and making enlargements in the traditional darkroom. This course will equip you with the skills required to use a darkroom without assistance.

Introduction to using an SLR + Film Processing
A short history of B&W photography.
How the 35mm SLR camera works.
Shutter speed and its associated effects.
Aperture and its effect on depth of field.
Setting correct exposure using the light meter in the camera.
Combining Aperture and shutter speeds.
Film ISO.
Loading Film.
A guided photowalk shooting a roll of 35mm B&W film in the local area.
Film processing
Introduction to film processing equipment.
How to load films onto reels in the dark.
Processing 35mm films.
Washing, drying & archiving 35mm films.
Sunday 11th October 2026: 10.30am - 5:00pm
Darkroom session
Darkroom etiquette/ Health & Safety.
Making a contact sheet of your negatives from the day before.
Making enlargements from negatives (10” x 8”). You can also bring other pre-existing B&W 35mm negatives if you have some.
Various printing techniques.
Tutor: Tiu Makkonen is a fine art and freelance photographer originally from Finland who has been living and working in Scotland for over a decade. Tiu has exhibited her work in both group and solo shows and currently works as the Resource & Skills Facilitator at Street Level Photoworks. More info here.
